November 12, 2004 Irwindale Speedway
The NASCAR ALL*STAR SHOWDOWN
was a non-event. I decided not to find out if TOYOTA and NEXTEL were going to enforce the "no digital camera" rule they posted. With all the people sneaking in pocket cameras and cell phones the sign was an insult to anyone cabable or reading the English language. The only thing interesting I saw before going home was the armed stealth helicopter hovering overhead.

The NASCAR ALL*STAR SHOWDOWN
is a 4 day event. The pit stop competition had a few hundred people and several racing teams packed into the parking lot along with food and fun for all.

October 13, 2004 Montclair
Cable Airport
is less than an hour from home but today was the first time I've been there. Bob Cable just filed a flight plan and was headed out to take Big Panda, the largest biplane in the world still flying, for a ride. The rules were simple: stay out of taxi ways, 250 feet from the runway, take all the photos I want! Check out CableAirport.com for airport events, photos and history.

September 26, 2004 Los Angeles County Fair
Willie Nelson
reached out into the audience and touched my heart. The stage was packed with family and friends. I lost track of the relationships between the band members but it's obvious that Willie is very proud of his son. The love and respect that flowed from the stage made it very difficult to take pictures while wiping away tears.

Tower of Power
Emilio Castillo, David Garibaldi, Rocco Prestia and Doc Kupka layed it down and the band delivered the goods. They mesmerized me just like they did at Parker's Ballroom in 1972. Be sure to check out the bumpcity web site for concert schedules and buy some CD's.

NASCAR Pop Secret 500 in Fontana
Under the umbrella of NEXTEL the California Speedway in Fontana is by far the worst run venue I have ever attended. The 200-300 unpaid volunteer ushers and crowd control people had no idea what was going on and were not empowered to do anything. The pre-race pit access was fun, but wheelchair access to the stands was awful. Worse yet, the drunk and rude so-called fans seemed to think the wheelchair area was a place to go and smoke. This made it nearly impossible to move around and impossible to see the race. NASCAR doesn't need NEXTEL, it needs to remember where it came from and do something about it. Enough said.

August 8, 2004 Little Tokyo
Taiko Festival
Once a drummer, always a drummer, so they say. For me this is true, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Taiko Festival in Little Tokyo. So much so that I hope to meet some of these groups and photograph their indoor concerts. This day was hot and the courtyard was packed, but it was hard to tell who had more fun; the audience, the performers, or the photographers.

August 6, 2004 Los Angeles Artist District
Factory Place
is the home of an elite art gallery in the expensive downtown Los Angeles Artist District. After 3 hours on bus and train to attend a reception at the gallery I discover the front door has no wheelchair access. No problem, call the gallery owner and have him open the loading dock gate, right?
Ahem, Wyatt Earp, you turned off your phones. (the light for photos was great... harsh... contrast... ;^) |
June 28, 2004 Pasadena
Sony Thugs
Sony Pictures Studios was filming in Pasadena, and as is often the case it was a closed set. Not much visible, no paparazzi, no spectators, just a Sony goon who came over and stood in front of my wheelchair and blocked access to the sidewalks and street.

This film crew
was mixing some fun with work at the end of their day of filming in front of the Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. The crew was kind enough to let me on the set and everyone had fun.

Pasadena Chalk Art Festival
Getting there is part of the fun so I took a few sidewalk snapshots on the way to the chalk art festival. The chalk art was fascinating, especially the work of our youth. Kudos to Pasadena for making many fathers proud this weekend.

June 11, 2004 Hollywood
The Players Run
arrived in Hollywood on Friday June 11, 2004, safe and sound, after 7 days of non-stop-fun that started in New York City. How much fun did they have driving 75 of the world's fastest street legal cars across the country? My lips are sealed. It was no surprise to me that my young cousin in the General Lee reached the finish line first.

May 31, 2004 Memorial Day
Zac Harmon
2pm and 95 degrees in the shade, a good time for the blues. The highlight of the performance was a surprise guest appearance. An exuberant young man walked on the stage and sang like an old pro. All I can say is that the Harmon tradition has been passed from father to son, and I've never seen such a proud papa (not to mention a son who could easily have taken away dad's mic for the rest of the show).

May 31, 2004 Memorial Day
Paul Brown
What does a Grammy Award winning producer with a passion for guitar do for an encore? Get a band together, record a hit album, and play. I know from 25 years behind the drums that it's hard to get fired up on a hot day with the sun blazing in your eyes. But when seasoned professionals get on a stage only one thing matters: the music and the audience.

May 31, 2004 Memorial Day
Poncho Sanchez
Concert promoters have a way of saving the best for last. From the first note to Poncho's final wave good night the crowd had a fabulous time. Latin Jazz has a way of crossing all borders and today was no exception. It was an emotion filled performance and a Memorial Day I will never forget.
Today, for the first time in a long time, I felt the spirit of freedom dancing in the air, and in my heart. Thank you all, for reminding me why I love America. |
April 18, 2004 Long Beach
Long Beach Grand Prix 2004
A few weeks after the marathon I decided to go to the Long Beach Grand Prix. I picked the wrong seating area for taking RACE photos (bad angle, too many fences, etc) but I had a lot of fun. I did met some people, however, and next year will be an entirely different experience.

Los Angeles Marathon 2004
I wasn't sure if I could endure a marathon but as the old saying goes, nothing ventured nothing gained. I arrived before the start of the race and got permission to plant myself in an unused spot in front of the finish line. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and a marathon I will never forget.

February 16, 2004 Downtown Los Angeles
Film Crew in downtown Los Angeles
I took my 1st photograph in response to a salute from a retired LAPD officer who was 'hamming it up' on the set. It was a bright sunny day but the street was engulfed in shadows so the final "rain making" could be digitally merged with the action shots. The film crew is the heart, the soul, and the magic of the big screen.

NASCAR in Arcadia
In early November 2003 I was headed home on the bus when I looked out the window and saw race cars on the street. I got off the bus and found a NASCAR pit crew competition in progress.
